“Knock, Knock: A Poem About Pain, Depression, and Letting Go”

Knock, knock. Who’s there?

Sometimes life knocks us down again and again, disguised as love, as protection, or as something we hope will bring peace but instead it brings pain. This poem is a journey through that experience: pain, depression, tears, and finally, the courage to let go.

The Poem:

Knock, knock,
Who’s there?
Him,
Him, who?
Him, pain.

Here we go again,
Another ride leading to pain,
Disguised as love,
Disguised as protection and provision,
How could I have known.

Knock, knock,
Who’s there?
Him,
Him, who?
Him, depression.

Here we go again,
Another ride leading to depression,
A time ticking bomb that will explode on my desperation for peace,
Another mental breakdown I wasn’t hoping for.
How could I have known.

Knock, knock,
Who’s there?
Him,
Him, who?
Him, pillow-tears.

Here we go again,
Another ride to crying myself to sleep,
Thinking of all the love I poured out to him,
And now I pour tears on my pillow every night,
An untold story through words of the pain you brought me,
How could I have known.

Knock, knock,
Who’s there?
Him,
Him, who?
Him, let go.

It’s time, let go,
Cry no more,
Don’t break yourself over this,
Be at peace, it’s not yourself,
You did your best,
Do not carry this burden,
Do not bleed over this,
It’s time, let go.

What this poem means to me

This poem reflects the cycle many of us know all too well, the hope, the pain, the breakdowns, and the difficult but necessary journey toward healing and release.

Pain disguised as love can trap us, and depression can weigh us down, but letting go is the courageous step toward freedom and pea

How to use this poem in your healing journey
